This is the perfect introductory class for beginners in casting. Our instructors have completed the Fly Casting Instructors Course at the Wulff School of Fly Fishing in Livingston Manor, New York. Topics covered include theory, practice, and the mechanics of casting. Learn the roll cast, basic cast, horizontal cast, and false casting. Enjoy learning at your own pace. Advanced instruction is available upon request. This class is held at Lake Imaging in Dupont State Forest. All equipment and materials are provided. Limited to 8 participants. A 20 registration fee is fully refundable upon class attendance. Ages 16 and up.

Twilight Firefly Tour june 10th

A sure sign of summertime is the blinking of fireflies or what some call lightning bugs. Join the Cradle of Forestry from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. for an easy, slow paced walk to learn more about the natural history of fireflies and enjoy the evening forest. The group will discuss the life cycles of the firefly and then walk about looking for them. Bring along a flashlight and your sense of wonder. Park and meet at the Pink Beds Picnic Area on Hwy. 276, located next to the Cradle of Forestry. Cost for this special evening program is $5 for adults and $2.50 for youth. Father’s Day Yacht Club BBQ

Join RiverLink at the French Broad River Yacht Club barbecue starting at 5 p.m. at Southern Waterways, 521 Amboy Road, for a traditional mountain barbecue, live music from the Firecracker Jazz Band and the Rib Tips. This is a fun way to honor your dad and enjoy a family evening on the river. Meals include barbecue and all the fixings plus desserts and a drink for $12 for adults, $5 for children 4-12 and children younger than 3 are free. There will also be wine from the Biltmore Estate and beer from the French Broad Brewing Company. Southern Waterways has a playground and volleyball net for family games. Second Annual Red Hot Chili Cook Off

Individuals and restaurants compete for the best chili title. There will be ICS and People's Choice judging, continuous music by local, regional and national musicians, arts & crafts, food and games from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Pack Square. The N.C. Bent Creek Classic

Grab dad and spend the afternoon learning the basics of using a compass and reading a topographical map at the Cradle of Forestry. Introduction to Fly Fishing — Skills Clinic for Fathers & Sons

Celebrate Father’s Day by learning how to fly fish together. This program, designed for fathers and their sons (must be 9 or older), presents the basics of fly fishing. The instructors are experienced anglers, excellent classroom facilitators and have completed the Fly Casting Instructors Course. Topics covered include equipment, casting techniques, aquatic ecology and fly identification. Equipment and materials provided. Program will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education. Bring your own lunch. Wear clothing suitable for entering the water and bring non-slip shoes or waders. SAWA Pro Lumberjack Meet

Cheer as professional lumberjacks compete in six events at the Cradle of Forestry. Some of the events include: Underhand and Standing Block Chops, Two Man, Jack and Jill and Single Handed Sawing. Admission for this event is $5 for ages 16 and older, $2.50 for youth 15 and younger and Golden Age and Golden Eagle Passport holders. 17th Annual Great Smoky Mountain Trout & Heritage Festival

This unique, family-oriented event is a full weekend immersed in the rich heritage of Western North Carolina and the importance of Mountain Trout as a valuable resource to the community.
