  thru May 15 - School Bus Safety Poster Contest - Each year, the National School Bus Safety Week (NSBSW) Committee conducts a poster contest to help publicize NSBSW. National judging takes place in the fall for a poster to be used the following year. This spring, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction is sponsoring a statewide poster contest. Winning entries will be displayed at www.ncbussafety.org and the top poster from each division will be submitted for the national poster contest. Visit www.ncbussafety.org for more info.

Celebrating Saluda’s 125 years of its heritage, the Saluda Business Association is pleased to announce its third annual Arts Festival scheduled for May 20, 2006 on historic downtown Main Street in Saluda.

Description:  This program, designed for mothers and daughters, presents the basics of fly fishing, one of the fastest growing outdoor sports for women of all ages. Topics covered include equipment, casting techniques, aquatic ecology and fly identification. Equipment and materials are provided. Bring a picnic lunch, wear clothing suitable for entering the water and include some non-slip shoes or waders.  Limited to 10 participants with daughters (or granddaughters) age 9 or older.

Time: Performances are 7 p.m. May 31 through June 2. On June 3, shows will be at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., and on June 4, shows will be 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets are $12 - $35. Description: Garden Jubilee offers more than 125 vendors selling merchandise and plants to enhance your garden and lawn along with handmade crafts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial Day weekend at the  The Lowe’s Expo will offer garden clinics and displays. The Lowe’s Kids Clinic will offer hands-on projects for children ages 4-12 during both days. Southern Living Magazine’s landscape and garden specialist Bill Slack will talk about “A Beautiful Backyard – Your Private Retreat,” at 11 a.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday; “Laid Back Landscaping” at 1 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday and “Your Garden’s Finishing Touches” at 3 p.m. Saturday. Mainstay’s Garden Jubilee Mountain Medley 5 Mile Race/1 Mile Family Walk will start at 7 p.m. May 27. To register or for more information, visit www.mainstayhelp.org. A post race barbeque picnic with live entertainment will be held. The Hendersonville Lions Club will hold a fund-raiser, The Blind Ducky Racing, featuring rubber ducks racing down the Patton Park creek at 5 p.m. May 28. The program will feature original songs and stories, many drawn from Mike's childhood visits to relatives in the Candler area. Suggested donations are $5 for adults and $2 for children. Refreshments will also be sold and all proceeds go to the West Asheville Library.
